Herbs
help to improve sleeping patterns in children
A combination of valerian and lemon
balm extracts was found to be beneficial in the treatment of
restlessness and dyssomnia in children less than 12 years old.
(Dyssomnia is a broad category of sleep disorders characterised by
either insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness).) In the
study, children were treated for at least 4 weeks and a total of 918
patients were evaluated. Restlessness and dyssomnia were reduced from
moderate or severe to either mild or absent in most of the patients. The
benefit was assessed as very good or good by parents (60.5%) and
investigators (67.7%). There were no herb-related adverse effects
observed. Key Finding: A combination of valerian and lemon balm was safe and effective
in the treatment of restlessness and dyssomnia in children.
These
herbs are available in tablet, tea and liquid form (yummy tasting
too!!). 'A combination of
valerian and lemon balm is effective in the treatment of restlessness
and dyssomnia in children'. Muller SF, Klement S. Phytomedicine

 | Male influence in avoiding early
pregnancy loss

Sperm
health and avoiding miscarriage
 Studies
have shown that the health of sperm DNA plays a very important role in
avoiding early pregnancy loss. Belinda recommends testing sperm DNA for
all male IVF patients, men over 40 and men with a high occupational
exposure to environmental or chemical toxins. Treatments for improving
sperm DNA are very effective and take around 3 months to achieve the
best results.
One
study looked at the importance of the male
influence on the cause of early miscarriage (Slama
et al., 2005).
They found that the increased risk
of miscarriage appeared to be due to paternal age and the
resulting
sperm DNA damage.
A
2006 study showed that sperm DNA fragmentation significantly affects
embryo implantation and development
in ICSI.
Clinical pregnancy and
pregnancy loss rates were significantly different in patients with high
and low sperm DNA
fragmentation. This study shows that testing and treating DNA fragmentation is
vital for achieving a positive pregnancy outcome.
It
is important that the cause
of DNA damage needs to be assessed so that proper
therapeutic treatment can be implemented.
'Sperm
DNA fragmentation: paternal effect on early post-implantation embryo
development in ART'. 2006. Borini et al. Human Reproduction Vol.21, No.11
Sperm DNA can be improved by: regular
ejaculation, supplemental antioxidants such as CoQ10, lipoic acid and
vitamins C and E, dietary and lifestyle modifications, detoxification
and other nutritional and herbal treatments.

Re-assess
your health today!
 Most of us strive
for good health, happiness, wellbeing and balance in our lives. To
achieve this, we sometimes need to look a little more closely at what
our body is trying to tell us. Many people live with a variety
of low-grade symptoms which are 'normal for them'. These symptoms
however, may be due to an underlying health issue or imbalance which can
usually be treated and result in better health and wellbeing. I
have attached a fairly comprehensive health appraisal which can be
printed and completed in 10-15 minutes. After completing the assessment,
you can determine whether your symptoms are a low, medium or high
priority. If you have any medium or high priority symptoms, please bring
your completed assessment to your next consultation so that we can look
at the underlying causes and identify appropriate treatment protocols. (A
longer, online version is also available for those who would like the
results sent directly to me and discussed at their next appointment - click here and use

 | Intellectual
potential in children

Is your child reaching their full potential?
 In
groundbreaking new research, iodine supplementation to correct the mild
iodine deficiency commonly found in Australian children has led to
significant improvements of cognitive brain function. Studies
have shown that even a mild deficiency can reduce a child's intellectual
potential! Iodine supplementation
resulted in significantly improved performance in tests of perceptual
reasoning, a high level intellectual function. As
Australian soil is extremely iodine-deficient, supplementation is
considered the best way to increase and maintain iodine levels. Iodine
levels are tested by a simple and non-invasive urine test so make an
appointment to test your child's levels today. |
